About Us
GIGsoc is NUI, Galway's Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender
Society. It exists to provide a safe space for LGBT students to
meet, have fun, and support one another. Getting involved with
GIGsoc can be an important first step for students who are thinking
about coming out.
We also try to highlight awareness of LGBT issues on the general
campus. GIGsoc is also there to help students who are experiencing
homophobia either in a social or academic context. The student union
works with us to make sure these issues are highlighted and dealt
with. The society is always open to new ideas about how we can make
life easier for LGBT students and increase awareness and tolerance
in the wider student body.
What does GIGsoc do?
The main emphasis in GIGsoc is on matters social (- what's the
point of being gay if it's not any fun?!!!) We meet every Tuesday
and usually adjourn to the pub as soon as possible. We show films,
organize a variety of social events, and travel to LGB events such
as USI's Pink Training weekend, the WERRC Lesbian Lives conference
and USI LGB standing conference.
In addition to our Tuesday meetings, we also offer an Icebreaker
service to potential new members.
Still not sure?
We in GIGsoc think it's particularly important to be accessible
and welcoming and we aim to make it as easy as possible to get
involved in the society. We all understand how difficult it is if
you are not sure/not out/or just out - we've all been there! - so
don't be afraid to get in touch....you won't regret it. |
